I'm taking note of all my contacts usernames here and will be adding elsewhere.

I've noticed quite a few well known jaiku users are now very active on Twitter now. I hate twitter for trying to keep track of discussions, but I still a good collective bunch of people I've started following. I quite like brightkite, but not everyone I know is on there, but might check again after this news.

Never got along with Brightkite that well. I'm feeling a redressing of my lifestreaming coming on and will probably utilise FriendFeed a lot more as it seems to be the best suited to a multi-format me.

What are all the different micro blogging options? And what are the different enhancement applications?

Jaiku has been dying for a long time. the mobile client blows - it has a ridiculous backstream limit, doesn't update friends OR their avatars, and doesn't run on newer phones like the 5800XM. There's no official client for other platforms, and desktop apps are limited, as well, specifically in comparison to others out there.

I've been more active on Twitter, but only because I have to - it's kidna the same reason I put videos on twitter - it's where the eyeballs are at.

@gerrymoth: Jaiku isn't disappearing, what's more the open sourcing means we'll be able to implement our own instances of Jaiku with federation, much like identi.ca/laconi.ca is doing. This Jaiku we are sitting in now won't change, but it's still a good reference point for when we better it. :D

@rcadden: No offence dude, but Twitter for attention and promotion is the right place for now, but as a social point of interaction it's like trying to have a conversation at a rock concert.

@overpills: I already exploded earlier today.

@rcadden, you have to take into account than abilities of the mobile app are not priority for - i dare say it - most of jaiku users. Desktop apps are limited, very true, something that open sourcing could help with, though i doubt it will, but that's another story.

i'm on twitter for the same reasons. it will never be any decent replacement for jaiku unless it becomes like jaiku (threads, channels) - which is highly unlikely, especially now, since google rules the valley.

@adonisdemon @overpills - right. I don't really particularly ENJOY twitter, but it's where the eyeballs are, and it's, oddly, a good place to monitor for stuff.

I'll def. miss Jaiku's level of conversation, and obviously I'll still be on here (old habits die hard). I'm just disappointed, really.

@rcadden: I don't think anyone can ever Enjoy Twitter, it's more anti-social than social! :p Bot for a business promotion tool, and source of information it's credible.

i understand that. so am I - to the point that i voiced it on my blog which i intended not to do when google bought jaiku (http://www.abinarylife.com/2009/01/story-of-a-jaiku-bird/). I just don't think this is particularly the moment to go all 'it's dead'. they are not switching down the servers. as for development - what surprise is this announcement after the year we have just witnessed?

I'm with @edythemighty on this one. Jaiku isn't dying, it's expanding. Trouble is, now there will be many, many Jaikus.

I'll admit that I jumped on Jaiku originally because of all the Nokia bloggers here, and the Nokia client app. I don't see why there can't be a future Jaiku for Nokia Bloggers, as long as enough of my friends agree where that should be. There could even be an official Nokia Blogger Relations jaiku. El Corpo! Wait, is that what I'd wish for.... ? : )

That's actually a very good example, @norcalbarney. Ning thrives on making online communities for different groups, having concentrated jaikus for certain folk, yet still maintaining it federated so you can speak to people in the "Blackberryku" is great.

  • KevanV

I want to see what the open source brings to the Jaiku community. I expect it should be good.

    11 months ago by KevanV

  • overpills

Kevan, it will bring nothing. it hasn't brought all that much to laconi.ca. Open sourcing something does not mean it will be developed. you also need people who won't just walk around talking about how great it is that something is open source and they could develop it, you need people who will actually sit down and code.

Another thing I'm worried about with many, many Jaikus : I hope the user's can cross silos. I still want to be 'friended" to the same people, even if some of them are also in the Knitting with Ethernet Jaiku that I'm not in.

@overpills, if you're that worried about it, I'll commit to extending Jaiku on my own site. Jaiku.nseriesus.com for everybody!

@norcalbarney: The blogpost leads to believe that yes, that will be possible. D:

  • arjw

@norcalbarney: you just basically noted the problem with all these social networks ; content silos. That's why I've blogged like I have lately ;)

  • overpills

@norcalbarney i'm no coder but I work on a lot of project that will certainly be seeing jaiku (although probably only internally) the moment it's released open source. I'm not worried about it surviving as a tool - i've seen enough creativity come out of this without any corporate initiative to know it will survive.

It would be nice if this central hub survives though, this is what i am indeed worried about.

    11 months ago by overpills

  • norcalbarney

@arjw, I'm hoping that the "OAuth integration" they're bragging about will enable cross-silo friending.

@yoggs yeah, i'm counting on the fact that i imagine it won't cost them much. also that the hate campaign would be pretty bloody ;)

and... for those who wake up too late: there are tools to recover at least part, like this http://socialgraph-resources.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/samples/findyours.html and this http://socialgraph-resources.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/samples/findcontacts.html

  • silpol

@overpills I know you would hardly ever turn your eyes/ears to me, but... relying on existence of central hub is your main mistake. Since you don't trust me anyway, I suggest you to consider reworking your strategy without my input, just accept the fact that your strategy will fail rather sooner than later.

    11 months ago by silpol

  • arjw

@sipol: nice, but nearly unusable at the current time on the Site Connectivity page (JS error prevents it from running); and it doesn't map https sites (which is something I really should be used to by now).

    11 months ago by arjw

  • overpills

@spilo i have been not aware of you talking to me. I am not realying on anything, nor am I preparing strategy for any one or any thing. least of all google. i'll wait till they pay me ;)
